Inheriting Attributes

Would it be wise to avoid eating and leveling stats before I bury my old body? Im not sure how inheriting attributes and stats works, will it only give me points in those up to the point that I had them before?

I got fucked by a bear because I had sound turned off, was at 50 hhp from wounds and wasnt paying attention.

It's not hard to die if you just get stupid. I always lay a hearthling to rest in the first 72 hours. It's become my "good luck charm." I prefer to do it on the first day, but sometimes you just don't spawn in the right area and have to go looking for trouble.
