How do I reasonably get Metal?

So correct me if I'm missing something:

In order to get Metal you have a Mine Hole or be next to a cave.

To make a Mine Hole you need 10 Hardned Leather. For 10 Hardened Leather you need 20 units of wax. Since Wild Beehives are basically impossible for a small group to harvest without having some lategame statted character since they seem to infinitely spawn bees the only possible wax is Candleberry Wax. In order to make Candleberry Wax you need to collect a what seems to be fairly rare herb, that only exists in a few biomes, and you need to collect a total of 100 of them.

Is that about right? Because if so, dragging my dick through a mile of glass seems like a more appealing prospect.

Get yourself some rustroot extract and use it on the surface to find some ore on the first underground level. Then find the nearest cave and work your way there. You'll want to do that before making yourself a minehole.

I usually don't even bother with rustroot, locate a cave with relatively soft walls, spend an hour doing some exploratory mining, you'll find metal.

Edit: That said, you don't need to live immediately adjacent to a cave. Anything within a few minutes walk is reasonable, especially now that you can teleport cartloads of ore back to your base.

Not everyone who plays this game tries to min-max everything, and as long as you don't eat like a moron it's not a big problem.

If you're mining for an hour before you find ore, it's going to become a problem regardless of what you're eating. You are giving strictly bad advice unless you happen to not care very much about developing your character. If that's the case with OP, more power to him.

Again, min-maxing isn't a big deal to everyone who plays this game. OP asked how to get metal, I gave him another answer. I don't particularly care about your opinion on this.
