How to trade hats?

Sorry if posted before just couldnt find it. How does one actually trade a hat? They keep disappearing.

Pretty sure you have to left click the hat, then right click who you want to transfer ownership to

Yep. There will be an option titled "Transfer hat ownership" or something like that.

Is it possible to just drop the hat to give them a one-time copy of the hat?

My understanding was that the hat persisted until the owner claimed a copy out of the hearth fire again. Was that changed?

If anyone who doesn't have that hat purchased tries to pick it up it will vanish immediately. That's what I meant by "no".
