Ore-bearing rocks on the surface?

In the last world, the early surface had some ore bearing rocks on them. Yellow ones with ochre, brown ones with heavy earth, &c.
I have not found anything like that this world. And the wiki seems to be missing them, as well. I only see ores you can get by mining in cave systems, no surface rocks.

Were ore-bearing boulders on the surface removed? Or are they around, but I just haven't looked hard enough, or otherwise lack the skill?

They were actually removed for W10, you must be thinking of W9. They're still gone.

I believe I've seen cinnabar, which is used in processing for mercury.. but that risk is up to you.

Do like most of the rest of us do and find walls you can chip. Go slow and don't work too close to previous positions. You'll find some somewhere.

Technically mercury is a metal. And cinnabar rocks are possible to find on the surface.

Ore rocks had a problem — they meant that people could start stockpiles ores as soon as they spawn. Without them, people at least have to mine for them.
Having gold and silver-bearing ores on the surface was even worse, one could bypass large amounts of mid-game content by hunting for them with alts.
Removal of ores from surface is just another thing that extends the early game. I’ve proposed bog ores to spawn in marshes, was hit with «will consider» from Jorb
