taming cows

It's in fighting stance and tied up with rope, and then i fight them and they keep dying, any tips?
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

Are you cheesing it by fighting it behind something, like a gate?

The "taming" tick seems to work like an attack. If the animal is unable to reach you when it attempts to finish the taming process this fails. Far as I can remember, the animal becomes untamable at this point. Probably an attempt to mitigate cheesing by the devs.

Second is probably a bit more obvious if you've tried taming sheep anyway. The HP segment where taming completes is fairly close to the animal's kill point. If you finish the animal with a single shot through the taming range and kill it, well you won't be able to tame it due to lack of necromancer abilities. Sheep have a really low hit pool, but you can still kill the other critters if you're using a high damage attack or your stats are really high. For sheep I switch to unarmed attacks after 100hp, using sideswipe hasn't been an issue for me with cows so far. But hey, maybe I just suck compared to the mighty overtyped. All praise dem pecs.

+1 to both points.
You cant cheese the last portion of the fight. The chance of death is much higher in this case.

that seems to be the case, ty. Cow is too strong to straight up fight, but horse and sheep are fine.
