Milk Production

Postby Hingle_McCringle » Tue Feb 26, 2019 4:16 pm

So i have a few questions about milk production in livestock i was hoping could be answered. I understand that in order to produce milk the animal must give birth, but after birth there are alot of questions i need answered.
1) How much Milk does a Lamb/Calf/etc need to drink to survive?
2 a) If I milk a parent dry will young try to drink a few times before it dies or if the young tries to drink from an empty mother will it die immediately? (much like a silk worm)
2 b) If i have 2 mother animals and 2 young animals and I remove one of the parents will both young drink from the same mother even though it was not is birth parent?
3 a) If I separate a mother animal from the young or if all the young grow up will the Animal keep producing milk as long as i keep milking it?
3 b) If "no" to the question above how long after the young grows up or is removed from the mother will the mother animal produce milk before it need to give birth again?

The answering of some of these questions may result in more questions.

I am not sure. Also I am going to say something which will probably raise a shitload of replies from old players that it's not so and give some proofs from legacy, but who cares how it used to be, we are talking about how it is right now. So here it goes: I have a suspicion that a baby can actually survive without a mother at all if there is enough food in the trough. I am not 100% sure and will test it some time when I have a throw-away baby animal. For now it is just a suspicion (and my neighbor last world actually claimed that he killed a mother almost directly after baby was born and baby survived, but I have not seen it by my own eyes, so...).

2 a) If I milk a parent dry will young try to drink a few times before it dies or if the young tries to drink from an empty mother will it die immediately? (much like a silk worm)

I have dried mother(s) dry several times (this world too). Babies survived. The stats on them did not change.

2 b) If i have 2 mother animals and 2 young animals and I remove one of the parents will both young drink from the same mother even though it was not is birth parent?

Seems so. Or they don't need mothers at all (see above).

3 a) If I separate a mother animal from the young or if all the young grow up will the Animal keep producing milk as long as i keep milking it?

Yes.
Too old to rock-n-roll, too young to die.

1) Wiki claims a Milk quantity 10 cow produces 1.44L of milk per day. From previous experience, I've noticed that a MQ10 mother can feed at least 2 calves without issue. I'm going to take a wild guess and say the calves probably drink 0.5L per day, but you can see the assumptions in there. Calves can drink from barrels, so keep your milk barrels away from them or they'll drink from it instead of their mother (matters if you're separating high Q milk out).

2)a) To expand: Milk is produced incrementally, baby always gets first drink. As far as I've ever noticed, you have nothing to fear about milking the mother, baby always gets fed. Baby takes starvation damage just like adults, and this carries over into adulthood. Starvation damage is a % reduction in stats and cannot be healed. Called "Wellfedness" in game now.

2)b) Answered already

I was having this debate with my friend recently, because I remember that change. And yet I've had two horses with starvation damage for almost 2 weeks now that hasn't healed noticeably. What timeframe are we talking?

Thanks ^^ I really don't think you need to worry about milking them, I've done it for 6 worlds now and never had issues with starving babies so I think you're fine. You just won't get much if a mother is nursing.
