Things have changed, but far as I understand the mechanics: All forest biomes give same base speed (1 week for trees, 3.5 days for bushes) while anything else gives x3 the base. Stunting is per time unit, not per growth cycle. So if you plant it on the wrong biome, very little chance it hits maturity. There are now also hidden speed nodes that boost tree growth speed. No way to find them other than to plant every species under the sun to see which works better, but the boost can be very noticeable if you find a good node.
My spruce trees were growing faster than my elderberry bushes for example. That's really rare from talking to people though, it's usually closer to 20-40% speed boost.
