Can we get some info on how trees grow?

Postby Mr_Bober » Sun Mar 17, 2019 7:01 pm

I've been trying to figure out what's the deal with trees and growth rate, but I can't seem to figure it out.

The same exact kind of tree, planted with the same exact water, soil, and pots, in the same biome grows at widely different speeds.

I've even had trees growing so slow, that the "offsprings" of their "siblings" grew before them.
(Trying to make it more clear. I planted A and B on the same day, same hour, same seeds, same everything. A grew full, so I picked the A's seeds and planted new trees. Those new trees grew fully before B did.)

Does anyone have actual information on how things work? Can we get any info from devs? We are not talking about a few hours or a couple of days off, we are talking weeks.

Same underground?
Or did the siblings manage to grow on a single tile of "Wald" biome that tress spawn around them in a 3x3 square?

yeah, same biome below the trees. Trees were at 2 tiles between each others, and had other trees around. It was first generation, so no Wald had spawned yet.

Now it's all forest terrain, and they still grow at very different rates...

I've grown maybe 50-60 trees now, my experiences don't match yours.

Biome matters, but only "Is this forest or not?" Forest sets base growth speed to 1 week, non-forest to 3 weeks I believe.

Stunting is based on per time unit, so trees planted on the 3 week soils basically never survive to maturity. Consider yourself an anti-vaxxer if you're planting them on dirt.

There are tree growth nodes that are hidden. Random areas of the world will grow different trees at sometimes very large differences in speed. I've seen a spruce tree node where spruce trees would grow in ~half the time other trees do. Typically you'll see flat 1 week growth times, or a 20-40% increase.

From all of this experience, and a fair bit of testing, it sounds like the soil you planted those trees on wasn't forest biome. It's the only thing that can cause weeks of time difference if the tree is actually growing and not stunted.

Yeah, I'm wondering if he's planting at the very egde of a steep node.

Have you tried to plant at a different side of your plot yet OP?

Or did you just mistake stunted trees (who don't grow any further) for still growing?

Base growth is always 1 week. His description is that one tree took "weeks longer" to grow. The only way this makes sense is if he planted on non-forest soil somehow. Timeline matches up for it.
