Should I use the Boarspear to hunt?

Postby wildair » Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:42 pm

What is the most ideal way to hunt with the Boarspear? I want to hunt with weapons but I don't have access to swords. I only have copper and cast iron.

If you're really not able to get a sword (by trading or further prospecting or whatever) a boar spear should do the job.
It's two-handed, you can't use most nice finishing moves but it's somewhat decent damage and probably been developed for exact the situation you are in.

Poke 'em with a stick ^^
Good luck!

I have never been able to learn Sting while holding a boar spear, I only have learned it while using a sword. If you have a sword then the spear is already usless and if you don't have Sting you're basically using unarmed combat. It's kinda counter intuitive that it takes harder to learn combat discoveries to use a boar spear when it's an easier to craft weapon.

Why exactly do you think it is harder to learn things with a spear? oO

It can't access parry due to not being a sword, so there's no free blue opening. It can't access sideswipe or chop because it is not considered edged, it can however access quick barrage.

So your options are

A) Find sting and some IP move, raise UA and use some combination of punch/left hook/op knock to land good stings. The problem is looting these moves without sting already is going to be hard.

B) Somehow loot quick barrage and poke things to death. Yet again the issue is looting quick barrage. I believe badgers can give it though so it's not impossible.

C) Make a metal axe and fight like normal with some combination of IP gen + chop/sting/cleave or uppercut+sideswipe. This won't be nearly as good as using a sword for this since the base damage is 45 instead of 90 for bronze, but it works far better than fighting with just UA.

D) Turn your cast iron into wrought to make http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Fyrdsman%27s_Sword and fight with a shitty sword.

I honestly feel like some combination of C/D are your best options. Boar spear would be tolerable ish if you could get the moves for it, but without the moves to kill stuff that'll be really hard since sting is a relatively "advanced" move to loot off tougher critters. QB doesn't make openings very well and knock its teeth out is one of the hardest moves to loot in my experience so you can't really count on getting that.

Use uppercut to raise yellow, and full circle. Quick barrage is probably useless for you, seeing as you can't cleave.
