How should I build my hermitage now?

Postby uncleseano » Thu Mar 21, 2019 10:01 pm

So I have my claim expanded and set, the size all maps out. Survey flags at the ready and all the mats needed for the palisade with my new manly miner for cheap labour at the ready.

Thing is now is seems that palisades are not the be all and end all now. I won't have the mats for a brickwall for a long time yet. So should I expand my claim 1 tile in very direction. Slap the pali down and then in the future put the brickie behind the palisade?

Last world I had two gates. It was kinda a pain in the arse so I might skip that but for the rest what do you recommend?

Gates for palisade are basically free (as they only cost blocks) so build as many as you see fit.
Planning for a brick wall inside has the upside that someone coming by while you build it... can't bash it while it has no soak.

Visitor gates are nice, but make sure that there is no unclaimed tile inside and keep in mind that they'll block you while in combat. In case you go the visitor route: place cabins with the best lock you can craft outside, so you have a place to run into and drop combat (to heath inside your wall asap, in case you have to flee to safety), then you would only need the slave key to these on you when going outside (but on claimed area) so you can leave keys to your gates inside your walls, where they can't be looted from your body. Master keys belong onto an alt that normally never logs in.

Gonna be honest, the difference between palisade and brick wall as I've read it doesn't seem to be critical. If the suggested values (24hrs for palisade, 36hrs for brick) I saw are going to be implemented, I see no reason why that would change whether or not someone would siege a hermit. Space wise they're suggesting 100 tiles, which means big boy villages would need 100 tile distant sniper walls, not something that can reasonably expected of a hermit since you'd need probably a 300x300 claim at least to support that if not more.

Imo leave space for a second wall and wait for the patch to see the exact mechanics.

It doesn't matter in practice, unless You're living in faction city / bigger city that is worth sieging. But could be nice to plan ahead to leave space for brickwall.
