Defensive weight is determined by the maneuver you are using. Some maneuvers are based on UA, others on MC and different maneuvers have different defensive weight multipliers. Shield Up for example has a defensive weight of your MC * 2.5 while Parry is MC * .8
Offensive weight is determined by what attack you are using. Just like with maneuvers, some attacks are based on UA, others on MC and different attacks can have different attack weight multipliers.
In combat, when an attack the is used, the attack weight is compared to the defensive weight to determine the multiplier for the effectiveness of the attack at creating opennings. If your attack weight is higher, the attack creates more opennings than if it were lower.
