Thieving - Asking the Real Questions

Postby GabeBrady1 » Fri Apr 05, 2019 3:06 pm

Hello everyone,

So i have a serious question... On my main account ive been doing my own thing with a buddy, and created a alt account to claim some land further away. But i want that character to be my Muscle if you know what i mean ;) The problem is i also want him to go around and steal stuff from time to time. My question is this, If my Alt account steals something from a claimed land exp. Metal Bars, will they be able to trace it to ONLY the alt character or also my main character? They live in different places mind you. Also if i were to use that metal bar to say make a pickaxe will they still be able to trace it? I've never stolen anything before besides from unclaimed places. I just dont wanna ruin anything me and my buddy have spent on because i get drunk one night and want to fuck around on my alt.

Tracking thieft stuff:
1) If it's not object (chest) but item (metal bar), if You consume item (metal bar), item cannot be tracked or object (chest) if it's destroyed
2) Hearthfire of person that THEFT can be tracked (HF can be bashed)
3) Thief can be tracked

In case You wonder if other character than thief can be tracked, it can happen if:
1) You take the object/item to your base while it can be tracked
2) You are online with item in your inventory (tracking stolen goods will point to You)
3) You are offline with stolen items (tracking item will lead people to your hearthfire)

In conclusion: 2 out of 3 tracking options will always point towards the thief and only one can track towards other character under some circumstances.

Thank you for the quick response! Ok just one last question then, is there a timer to tracking / scent being left behind? If i was to steal a item today and a scent was left behind, how long would they have till the scent went away if they didnt grab it? Or does it just linger forever? But from what im understanding, if i steal something i can be tracked no matter what, but if i consume or craft it into something else then give it to my main character it cant be tracked, but my alt who stole it will still be tracked even if the item is crafted / consumed?

Yes, regardless of what happens to item, hearthfire and theif can be always tracked as long as theft scents remains on. Who uses that item, doesn't matter as long as it cease to exist.

Theft scents take somewhere of 3 days to wear off always I think. Someone could say it more accurate.
edit: wiki says something about 2 days and 16 hours IN-REAL (8 in-game days).

the scents are on the thief not the item. Consuming an item doesnt remove scents.

Both the op and the respondent spoke of items being trackable. According to the wiki it is the thief that has scents, items do not get scents, items are not trackable.

Play the game, not the wiki.

Edit: That was short of me, but people talking about things they've only read on the wiki brings my piss to a boil. Theft scents allow you to track both the item and the thief, but the item tracking will stop working after the item stops existing. Thief remains trackable for as long as the scents exist, which for Theft is as Aceb said a little under 3 days.

Not a problem at all. I'm not so small I cannot accept when I am wrong. Thanks for teaching me something as well.
