Cutting down Towercaps

Postby Grog » Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:53 pm

Is there any sane way to cut them without having to fear cave ins out of no particular reason?

Build a support right beside it then chop it down.

ninja'd by bmjclark....

I have seen reports of the opposite, but I'm unsure of the details leading up to the report so can't be sure if they're accurate or not. Jorb, I think, has said user error so far on all of them.

Building supports does indeed help a bit, but you still get left with some murky chance (of around5% maybe?) of getting a cave in right next to your support.

Build a stone support, it has a larger radius than the tower cap so you're safe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have not mined any tiles in range of the towercap after it was planted, and you also have not removed any supports that overlap with its range, then there should be a 0% chance of a cave-in if you chop it down, right?

You'd think, but I've definitely cut down a towercap that was planted in a remote area just for logs and caused a cavein.

That's exciting to hear. I guess I will be cutting them down with alts only.

Did you plant it in a cave? Or in an area you mined out?

Unstable tiles that exist in a cave can cause cave ins from breaking mine supports (or tower caps). Even though you didn't mine them, it still counts. My poor miner got about 40 rocks on his head when he learned this the hard way :(
