Do animals regenarate their hp while out of combat?

I've been trying to hunt some boar. Got on a boat, shot him with a sling until he starts to run. After running after him and punching him, he starts to aggro me again. After few of these cycles i run out of stones and i don't know if he recovers hp while out of combat. If he didn't then i could run back to camp for more stones.

a boar has 450hp, if you are just punching it, you may not be doing enough damage and this may be why you think this.

The real question is : why go back to camp ?
Just chip stone on the nearest boulder ?
