After a mine support is destroyed, (intentionally) and causing a collapse, there is usually new (cave walls) as well as boulders that rain down. my question is... without building a new support can those cave walls that came down be safely mined/destroyed or is there once again a chance for causing a secondary collapse?

It gets slightly worse, it is possible for a cave in to put a minewall on an unstable tile that was never mined out. Both natural caves, and tiles removed from the 'Natural Gallery' event can be hidden cave-ins that will only happen if a new minewall spawns on them
