More than 1 character logged in at once?

Is there a way to have another alt logged in at the same time? I tried opening another window and logging into same account, but it boots the other account. Will this work if I setup another account, or am I missing some extra step here

Yes, but it does require the characters to be on separate accounts. I've long since taken up "one character per account" with only a rare exception just so I can have both logged in at the same time if need be.
