Friend should be able to make a bow, but can't

Postby Sartharion » Sat Mar 07, 2020 12:58 pm

Hey, so a friend who is starting out in HnH is trying to make a Hunter's Bow. He's discovered string, both spindly taproots and stinging nettles, as well as tree bough. He has bought the Archery skill. However, he's still unable to make a bow. Did the recipe change? Is he missing something?

I doubt leather would make good bowstring and by that point sling is probably better due to more easily obtainable ammunition.

leather already goes into a lot of recipes that don't really need it, though
what part of the wheelbarrow or palisade wall is made of leather?

Ever build either of these? You can look at it either of two ways: one, simply a "tech hurdle" that needs to be jumped, or two, look at designs of the iron age period. Leather was used for a lot of things you wouldn't think of because we have different methods of doing things today. As is, people should have their leather sometime in the next 24 hours (depending on how well they were able to protect drying racks and tanning tubs).

sure, but i'm not trying to say that wheelbarrows and palisades shouldn't require leather, just that it's not improbable that they added a similar hurdle to bows, despite the fact that leather wouldn't make a good bowstring like the person I replied to originally stated

My stance is as much #1 "just a tech hurdle" as you need hide straps to make a sling, but it is #2. Leather was used as a grip and arrow support to build up around the typically "too narrow to comfortably grip" staff of the bow. You can certainly make a primitive bow without the grip and use your thumb as the arrow support, but it's much harder to fire accurately.

I think we could make a good argument for a "primitive bow" that can be used day 1.

Primitive bow was upgraded in difficulty because of the hunting and archery reworks likely. Trying to slow down day one cheese.
