Help with Terraforming

I can't figure this out even after checking the guides. My goal is a small wall around the cave entrance (I'll move the claim stake later) and then a bigger wall around the house and such. After hours playing with the bizarre terraforming system I'm not really getting anywhere. I got patches of the cliff removed but the two mini-cliffs that remain are just indestructible. They can't be dug from the top and soil placed beneath them just disappears without changing elevation. This is true for the little area to the right of the cave too. Dirt just sometimes vanishes with no effect and sometimes doesn't and its frustrating to have to move huge amounts of dirt to an area I ultimately want to lower. I've seen people dig all around cave entrances before so that they're just sort of a small mound. How is that done?

Drop a ton of dirt at the base of the cliff. When dirt despawns, it adds elevation to the tile below it. If the dirt despawns without adding elevation, do it on the tiles nearby. There is a limit on peak to trough. That is to say, you cannot have elevation climb 100 meters across one tile, you need to stagger it. Shockingly simple, but probably unintuitive.

In that case isn't it impossible without destroying the house? The ledge right below the cliff can't be made lower because "too steep to dig" and because the cliffs, and it can't be made higher because the peak to through from the dirt under the house would be too high?

YOU BET.
Good luck.

I'd just live with it looking like ass and do something pragmatic instead until you can warrant taking the time to move it.
