Potato Mode for Default Client?

Postby qoonpooka » Wed Mar 11, 2020 4:41 pm

In EVE Online, fleet commanders may order a fleet to switch their clients to 'Potato Mode.' This means turning all graphics options to their lowest quality (highest performance) settings because it's expected that there's about to be too many ships for your average graphics card to handle.

I just tried playing H&H on a machine that isn't my own and it's... bad. Skipping probably 75% of frames, commands take countable numbers of whole seconds to be acknowledged, etc. Fortunately all I wanted to do was swap my curios, but even that took ten minutes.

Is there a way to get the client to boot up in a looks-like-shit-but-gets-the-job-done mode?

EVE is a AAA MMO with a development team of a dozen just for the rendering engine. Don't expect the same from a two man team. ;) (EVE has also gone from the server being the performance issue in fleet battles to "how many? we don't care! We can handle it!" causing the client to be the bottleneck. It's just gotten crazy!)

As far as what you can do, you can try the beta client that is still in testing found here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=66937 Note--it is in testing. Most of the crashes and bugs have been worked out, but there are still a few issues that need work before it is considered finished. I've been stable with it for a bit now, but I can't say everyone should be. There are also no graphics options in it, so if you system can't handle the lighting calculations and such, it will not be much better than the current standard client.

You can try one of the custom clients found in the Wizards' Tower. Several have extra options such as minimizing animations, hiding trees, crops, etc, and have some power gamer features that aren't in the standard client. Various ones perform differently, so you might need to try a couple different ones. Ender, Amber, and Purus Pasta are generally trusted by the community.

Fair point, but I'm not asking for them to cater to me, I'm asking what options are available...

I'll give this a try then, yes.

I use Amber at home. This isn't my usual machine though, so downloading a client is an iffy proposition.

"None." My point was that CCP has a reason to do this--bigger and bigger fleet battles. It's amazing what they've done with the technology, but they're the only ones really doing this.

You have a couple of options in the client for lighting and antialiasing. Disabling both with give a significant improvement to performance, but if it's a slow enough machine, it won't be enough. Outside of that, you need to mod the client to do various things like disabling animations, hiding parts of the environment, etc., that actually give more performance improvement.
