Questions about Hunting/Combat

Postby Artyom15 » Fri Mar 13, 2020 10:02 am

Two (like three or four actually) worlds ago before a lot of the combat changes were made, I was a pretty decent hunter. I could 1v1 gg no re bats and foxes, and had the strategy for boar genocide down enough that I was bringing in 2-3 a day. Since then I've been keeping an eye on the updates but haven't played since, and I have a few questions about a few changes I read about/thought I read about.

1. Are there any up-to-date combat guides? I found one, but I have no idea if it is still current/relevant with all the changes that have been made. Right now I'm getting my ass kicked by bats, but I'm 90% sure that's because I haven't dumped lots of FEP/LP into AGI and UA yet. Honestly back when I did play I wasn't too confident in my combat abilities, and concussions suck enough that I feel the need to ask rather than try to dig around myself anymore.

2. IIRC I read that boars and other larger game has a chance to turn around and start trying to maul the shit out of you during the chase portion - was this a change that was made? It doesn't sound fun to deal with honestly. Scratch that question - looked back through my posts and got my answer. Jesus christ it has been awhile since I've played.

3. Not a question, but rather I just want to say - fuck bees.

The systems have changed somewhat, but from a bat killing perspective Zebra's is still relevant after skimming it:

My personal preference for noobie combat though has been leaning towards MC the past two worlds. Shields give an incredibly good source of armor for hunting. Anything past chip damage is very likely to outright KO you as a beginner, so I find having more than 4-5 AC unnecessary for hunting as a beginner at least. That and the shield up maneuver gives a lot of stat padding to your defenses when your stats are low and need it most.

Honestly the big change is the impact of archery on early game hunting. Archery got a huge buff and archery kills give combat moves, which means you can get the very crucial early deck starters without actually needing to suffer deckless combat.

That's the guide I was reading through. Are there any real major changes I should be aware of skimming through it?

I have some leather lying around - if that is the case I should make a shield and a bow honestly. Would probably help a lot I'm guessing.

Combat moves from archery? Fuckin' mint. Grinding ants for combat moves was turbo-cancer back when I was learning combat properly a few years back.

The thing that disables KO protection is now an ability you get access to activating after buying murder. All skills on their own are safe to take now.

Animals are now capable of bashing boulders. The way to cheese tame, if you're playing by the game's rules (There's a bug I'm sure, but I'm not going to suggest someone use it and get murked by a horse when they stealth patch it), is to pen them near water and then boat cheese them if you can't tank them directly. Same as always, you need to face tank the last 50ish hp to make sure the taming tick lands on you. It's an actual attack to range kiting doesn't work for it and it only happens once.

Stat values are a little wonky due to delta changes. The cheese values are right, but I'm not sure about the stand and fight ones.
