how does the armor of mobs work? and how much armor does a boar has?

Boars have about 45 damage reduction. It's not armor exactly, armor pen doesn't work against it. Bears and Moose seem to have about 65 iirc.

Does this just mean the first 45 damage from any attacks to it are just ignoreD?

Correct. It can be "broken" (probably leftover from re-using player armour mechanics) but you need 5k to do that on boars which are the least armoured.

That can't be right. I'm hitting boars for around 45 total with a hunter's bow and bone arrows. The boar's armour only absorbs 15 from each shot.

The same with melee attracks. Only 15 damage is absorbed by boar's armor the rest goes to red.

and this is why hunting boars is mostly a waste of time with early, low stats, because it is better to hunt badgers, beavers, foxes and catch small critters to get the animal resources
the only exception is when you want boar tusks or boarhides for the gilding but that's it

There's that +str meat for sausages and whatever... can't always be at a cave angler spawn for that superior str fish.
