How does Vengeful Incantation work?

I have a murder scent here and i want to send a nidbane after it but don't have the resources for a fetter. How does using the Vengeful Incantation work? Will it spawn a nidbane? How does it know which scent to bind it to? Do i just have the murder scent in my inventory? Or does it perhaps give me a fetter? Want to know so i don't accidentally waste 7.5k EXP. Thanks.

when you use it, it just buffs yoru character, the next time you send a spirit, it buffs that one, and that one only. The scent is part of the recipe to make the fetter.
