Dirt stockpile?

Is it not possible to create a dirt stockpile of some sort? I am trying to dig down a certain plot of land but since my dirt keeps dropping when my inventory is full, it'll simply decay into the ground and raise itself up again.

You have to click the dirt onto the ground manually like any other stockpile, if you're using the Survey tool your dirt will automatically go into the stockpile til full.
