Rivers, dangers and settling

Postby pablet » Fri Mar 20, 2020 12:27 pm

Hey! I just started playing with a friend, we settled in a Peninsula in a river. I used to play years ago when this was a bad idea since you'd get raided so often. I already got robbed and I'm thinking of moving since the area is crowded so:

- How should I decide where to settle as a hermit/2hermit settlement?
- Is there such a thing as a world map I can check? How can I know where I am exactly? (I have mapped quite a lot of the area by boat already)
- Other than Yeomanry and a boat, do I need anything else before moving?

Thanks guys.

I usually first find an empty cave, where I can start producing leather for a palisade. Having everything inside the cave means that riders will often ignore you when moving around.

Then, I look for an area at least 2 minimaps away from water and local resources, possibly close to a cave system for early mining. When I have my leather ready, I rush a palisade to defend my new village.

This is our best public map I guess: http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=67405

I don't think you strictly need anything else, except for skills linked to leather

Settling on rivers isn't as bad as it used to be as long as you have a palisade because palibashing isn't a thing anymore. It will still attract more attention than you'd get farther from water, but it's not as dangerous.

With people riding horses, settling away from water is also a bother... to avoid that bother, you build a road from your gate to the water, which just negated the whole concept of "don't build next to water to not be seen." So settle wherever you want as long as you can get a claim placed and dry and a palisade started.

Places to avoid:
 • Within a map section of a swamp (spawning mechanics... learn them if you don't know),
 • within sight of mountain terrain,
 • high traffic areas... such as you notice a large village in a spot. Don't pick a spot between them and the most likely route from them to the ocean. If you dont' get raided by the large village, you might get raided by the large village's enemies thinking you're an outpost or a friend of them.
 • Areas with little "horse/cart/wagon" accessibility--areas where you have to go way out of your way to take a more direct route to the areas you want to go. There were sections of the continent I was on last world where the only options to get around were boat or swim to run some of my quests... it was a huge pain because that cluster of rivers and lakes were more or less cut off from the ocean (had to go way out of the way to get back in there) and you couldn't just ride a horse around due to the lack of shallow crossings.
