Boat damage

Postby Azureek » Sat Mar 21, 2020 2:29 pm

Hello, so wiki says that tarred rowboats can take damage and be destroyed by swimming in deep water.
WARNING: even though Tarred Rowboats can traverse through deep water, it is usually not recommended as they can only take one tick of damage before they are destroyed. They can be used to travel through a small strip of Deep Water tiles at best (for the Hearthlings that are daring, foolish, or desperate).

But i've been traveling through deep water with a dugout for some time now and it never destroyed. Are dugouts better than rowboats or do wiki mean deep sea/ocean water by deep water?

Whoever did that wiki page and the Deep Water page are entirely incorrect.

There are five types of water:

Shallow lake/shallow ocean, one is light blue, one is a lighter cyan. You can drive a boat or wade through it on foot. Only difference between the two is foregables and whether you get salt/normal water from them.
Deep lake/Deep ocean, darker blue, can be swam through or instead you can use a boat. Again, identical other than spawns and type of water item gained. It does not damage any boats.
High Seas. Found far off a continent. Represented by a very dark ominous blue. Can be swam through. Damages any non-seafaring boats. Dugouts and rowboats are destroyed, snekkjas and knarrs can sail on it. Extremely dangerous!
Total misplay.

You should actually say "damages all boats, but non-seafaring boats take extra damage."

I think borka posted a pic in the screenshots thread or elsewhere showing he got about a full map section out on the high seas in a dugout. Rowboats take less damage, but I'm not sure how far you could get in one.

waterdepth 3

(might be i'll experiment with a rowboat at that part sooner or later)

Image

1. walkable - no probs with dugout, rowboat
2. not walkable - no probs with dugout, rowboat
3. not walkable - probs with dugout, rowboat

Inlands are no waters that harms boats ... only ocean water may harm boats

take a look at last worlds (11) map - you get a clue that the dark blue ways are Knarr (Snekkja) only
https://odditown.com/haven/map/#x=8.56&y=21.28&zoom=5

this world (12) has a post that lets you imagine a distance not suitable for dugout or rowboat (Snekkja in image)
