How do you deal with theft?

I've been playing this game on and off for a few years, but I've never had the problem with thiefs. I just logged on, and this random dude was running around on my farm stealing everything he could pick up. Me and my brother kept following him, pushing him around intill he started punching back. We took out our bows and stuff, but he knocked my brother out and stole all his stuff. From what I could tell, it's a guy how just spawn in, unlocks criminal acts, and start stealing what he can come over.
So now is my question. How do you deal with people like this?

After world reset, a lot of people are playing.
Also, it seems that everyone spawned on the same, small continent.
These things result in increased crime rates.

It could be worse, around my place people are just running and boating around, KOS'ing everyone.

My suggestion is that you get a stake claim, build a wall (palisade or a brick wall, other walls are useless) around it. Then avoid going outside with characters or equipment that you are not ready to lose.

I will say in old worlds where we all started centrally, we could at least wander away a few hours on foot to a corner or something and not worry about being bothered. Now? Have to have a seaworthy vessel to cross to another land.
