New Food Variety Bonus

Postby Ysh » Mon Apr 06, 2020 4:52 pm

It have come to my attention that food variety bonus have changed in this patch. Old formula of 2*sqrt(max_stat*10)/10 on wikipedia no longer models in game result! Anyone is aware of new formula?

The formula is accurate, but it is missing an attenuation factor. As you eat more variety, the bonus gets smaller by some value that, I assume, should eventually approach 0. It was patched in after the whole "spiced axe" ordeal of w11 at some point.

Have you test this yourself to confirm? Based on my test, the formula is not accurate even for first food eaten. Required FEP due to variety is reduce by even more than wikipedia formula will predict for this first food.I think even if ''attenuation factor'' is affecting first food eaten, it do not explain disparity between wikipedia and actual result since this would suggest reduction will be less than wikipedia predicts.

Last world after it was implemented. I don't recall the formula changing, just the attenuation factor. I just never nailed down the changes.

Below are image of FEP meter before and after eat walnut.

Max stat is 25, so wikipedia formula predict variety bonus should be 2*sqrt(25*10)/10 = 3.16. If we subtract from bar, we will expect then 25 - 3.16 = 21.84 FEPs to level, but instead actual value is 19.52. Either base formula has changed, or this ''attenuation factor'' actually produces a bonus for the first foods eaten before eventually providing attenuation.

I recall doing a few tests before and after the patch, although I lost my numbers.

I found that if you eat ONE food, you get more variety bonus than before the patch.
If you eat TWO foods, the existing formula is accurate.
If you eat THREE or more foods, you get less variety bonus than before the patch.

It was a pretty harsh nerf to variety bonus, and since then I've stopped thinking about variety bonus at all except to try not to double foods up between dings (but I don't, for example, preferentially eat foods with lower hunger value but the same feps per hunger)

This is good information, thank you.

It sound like latter is actual case then, where this new factor provide bonus initially before apply diminishing returns.
