The animal goes into a different stance. Looks like its in combat. Usually takes 10-24hours from when you hitched it. It is random as heck. Then you aggro it with with the yield icon and punch it down til it dings. Yellow numbers say how far along the taming process is in %.

Failure to hitch them after this process may result in them disappearing.

Step 1: find animal you want to tame
Step 2: feed them a clover
Step 3: leash them with a rope on a hitching post
Step 4: wait untill they enter aggresive stage
Step 5: attack the animal unaggro it and punch it untill its had enough
Step 6: Repeat step 4 & 5 untill you tame the animal

Then it seems like a bug. I'm taming animals with no problems.

I;ve heard of a bug where animals dissapear if you hitch them on a map grid border. Not sure if that's true, but i always hitch them far from those. Hitched once on the border and one animal did dissapear.

Same story for today, after 1tamming process done, animal gets 45% of tame done, now 14hours after tamming i just log in and animal basicly dissapeard. My hitching posts are on two map grid borders-thats the reason i guess, try another spot ...but jesus....

Are you 101% sure you hitched it back to the post after the taming process?

Still reported issues here and there of animals despawning off of hitching posts for no known reason.

I don't know if the "unloaded map" issue is still around. It's just a precaution everyone I know takes in game. As a precaution: don't build hitch posts near map edges. If the animal and hitch post are in the different map sections when they unload, it can end up despawning.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

You're using a different post for each animal, yeah? You can't hitch them all to the same post.

Additionally, if you miss the aggro stage, it will just disappear without warning. And as people have mentioned, not re-roping it will despawn it.

Have you trained taming other animals?
