How do I take materials back out of an unfinished building?

I've started building a timber house and realised I didn't pave the ground underneath it. How can I take out the materials from the unfinished timber house?

You can only destroy the sign and lose the materials.

but in old hnh it was possible to put the materials into the building sign without actually using it up, so you were able to take it back

It was possible to store materials in it, but not to take it out once actually built in. Stockpiles have replaced the former function.
