Didn't understand what happened?

Postby Nia » Tue Jun 16, 2020 2:46 am

Hi! I started playing 3 weeks ago and today I probably finished it. Two guys had killed my newbish character, and they had come though the visitor gate, so i really didn't understand that safe mechanic. My friend (same fresh player as me) told me that's probably it's because they came though gate and made it to village claim from my claim, then return and be able to kill me. That's only explanation we could see here.
These guys asked for food so I let them come through these gate with flags, because people told me that's impossible to attack with visitor buff.
Well, what i gonna say. I literally see no reason why they killing dudes who just started to play. Make me sad? Well, I'm not, just didn't understand what a reason (don't play our game, noob?) and disappointed. Some people around tried to help me, one gives me 2 low tier horses to jump around, and second one gives me the iron axe to chop trees and dead animals. That's why I started to play despite the fact I didn't want to for first time. These guys made me doesn't want to play, because why? If the people around are so stupid to kill fresh players and made them leave the game, so why play? Like, sit at base and never talk to anyone? It's boring. Maybe there is some closed little game for chosen ones, if people so hate new players here? Our coolest crop is 45q, our horse is 7 tier and we barely can do mining with 40 str. So it's not about the items, because it's a trash. Or maybe this is the only fun here just to kill someone because there is nothing to do anyway? I really afraid of that, because game looks cool, but sooooo desolate. One person who helped me already didn't come online for a week.
Idk. Some newbs thoughts here because I'm not sure to start again.

There have always been those in any PvP game that just goes out and does it for the lulz. There's not much you can do short of attempting to change human nature.

As far as the visitor flagging goes, if a person comes through visitor gates, they keep the flag as long as they remain on the claim that they passed on. If anywhere isn't a visitor gate, say like passing through a minehole, off the claim, and then back up the minehole, they lose the visitor status and don't regain it when coming back onto the claim. (In the case of mineholes, this is important why you wall and place visitor gates at them, at least on the top side, and preferably on both sides.)

If the village claim did not cover the visitor gates, or they were able to leave your claim without passing back through the visitor gates, then it may be possible to drop the flag and attack. I'd need to see the area to be able to see where the flaw might be. Feel free to PM me with further information if you don't feel like sharing it publicly.

I disagree.

There are quite some mechanics in the game that could deter from rolfstomping newbies for lulz would the devs be interested in the game being less of an implementation of Orwell's prediction of a bleak future... a boot stomping a human face, forever.

The developers have already done a lot to keep beginners safe.

The palisade on an active claim cannot be broken without a ram, it is quite difficult to kill a character without rage.
What would you like? Immortal characters with up to 100 white stats? It doesn’t work that way, it is a game about pain and suffering.

Do not risk more than you can afford to lose, exit the game when you are afk, learn the mechanics of the palisade and the guest gate, change with other players with the help of alt's, protect your mine, your sneka.
Want to feed someone? Place the table outside the palisade.

Stop whining and plant the carrot again, inheriting a dead character.
This is a game for the strong-willed and those who have at least a drop of an inquiring mind. Nobody forces you to play, but developers should not turn the game into a casual farm.

Oh, thanks for replies, now I see.
I'm not whining, because the only right decision here is "don't like - don't invest". Time, money, etc. I never understand people who are whining and playing again. When I was typing this post I was mostly curious about the answers. Now I guess situation like this kinda classic for this game, right?
About noob protection. I didn't ask any. Maybe more clear mechanic? Game is literally a mess, wiki is a bit dead and interface is horrible. That's a problem. You're new, you don't know how it's working and you cannot google it fast (you can have wiki or bunch of forum guesses). Complicated games are fine when you have access to the information or mistakes are forgivable. With half-dead wiki and no people around (because everything I see are empty active claims or abandoned ones) to ask them about the some mechanics makes it hard to get into the game. I decided, thanks. Also playstyle with permanent social distancing (just in case!) is unacceptable for me :)

If you can even notice the wiki is outdated, you are not as new as you claim

^^ Well, that's not necessarily true or strictly accurate considering there are wiki pages which clearly state they are out of date and the forum Ring of Brodgar Wiki thread also has plenty of posts about the wiki needing changes to bring it up to date. :)

@ Nia

Most ppl here would agree with you that killing new players is indeed pretty dumb, most of us recognise that without new or returning players the game would eventually become obsolete. Luckily, enough new ppl manage to survive or enjoy the game enough to give it another try, which keeps us ticking over. We don't all hate new players as you experienced yourself with those that gifted you the axe and the horses. :)

As with any game that has pvp there are obviously going to be those who focus more on that side of the game and an element of those who don't really care much about any consequences of their actions. As MM says, there is not really that much you can do about that.

However, there are ways to safeguard more effectively which you learn through these kinds of experiences and from other players in the game. It always seems a shame to me that ppl quit after their first raid or death if they enjoy all the other aspects of the game. There is so much more to Haven than the pvp aspect.
Atm you are understandably disappointed but I would suggest that you inherit your character anyway, give it a day or two and maybe try again. You still have your base and will inherit a proportion of your skills and experience.
You don't have to live in isolation, I certainly have never played that way, you just have to judge each situation as it arises and know (and accept) that there is a risk of 'stranger danger' ... :)

Getting to know your neighbours in the game is a good start to socialising and for help if and when you need it, there are realm chats and area chats for communication and kin lists for personal chats.

If you decide to give it another go, good luck! And if not, I'm sorry to see you go.

More like W. Golding's.

I have no idea why some game developers are so fascinated with recreating sociopath-fostering environments.

Because creating an environment that relies on others to police a population turns into a nightmarish dystopian system. (Am I talking about games or real politics here? :!:  ) Conversely, allowing a group of people with no moral code to police themselves/others ends up in a state of anarchy. Neither is desirable. Neither can be avoided.

Mostly, it's that people do want to be competitive with each other in a "safe" environment--in other words, one in which you can't actually die because of your poor choices. A viking raider isn't going to give me a new vagina on my head because I had no business trying to stop them from raiding my iron age fishing village. I should have chosen to simply pay tribute and be thankful they don't take my wife for the voyage home.

I just want to say As a returning player if the devs make this game anymore carebear they will lose the thing that makes HandH what it is. Fter returning I've been playing 4weeks now and I'm disappointed that No one has killed me yet. The game is a massive learning curve and mistakes get made and the game will bend you over a table for it. This is why I play it.
