As long as the animal is in range of the trough, they get fed no matter what is in the way.
Newly tamed animals can take a day or two before they start eating from a trough. Even if the trough is empty, animals will try to eat the grass, which counts as q10 fodder.
Damage to the animal's hunger bars isn't permanent, but it can take some time to heal. As long as it remains small, it won't have an impact on low quality animals.
