How do I mine without Amber? (Not knowing tile type sucks!)

Amber had the function where you could Shift-hover over an exposed cave wall, and it would tell you the stone type / ore type. I'm not finding it in either vanilla or Ender. Mining without this feature is going to be a HUUUGE pain (for me at least).

How are you going to mine in W13? Is there a client that supports resource identification? Do you think it's not particularly important?

Just open the wiki mining page full screen on another monitor and then zoom in on the images one by one next to the cave wall ingame.

Here you go.

That should help quite a bit with identifying cave walls until you've just memorized them.

Most players look like this so they don't need to think about what they're mining. They are one with the cave.

Mine a chunk out of the wall to test it.

I'm sure a public client will have that feature, Shubla said his is coming out and I'd be surprised if it doesn't have it.

Dammit, Burinn!! I told you to quit doxxing me and my girlfriend!!!!11

On the serious side, you can learn the rock types by the texture. Geologists world over have done it for centuries. The game textures are (more or less) all on the wiki. edit: meant to post this when I posted this message. Silly me got easily distracted: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Stone

Yes, I've been using that link for years. Certain minerals look too similar, especially if you haven't seen one of the two for a while. E.g. I constantly confuse blood rock and porphyry. :/

I agree it can be tricky. I blame jorb for his lazy art. ¦]

edit: shubla has posted an update to his client, Puru's Pasta. It has some different tools than Ender, and he's replicated some of the stuff that others have put in their clients.
