Would not use a bow, sling works well enough

Ranged weapons lose damage if you get too close, in order to tame animals they have to be touching you for the final taming tick.

Possible, but I wouldn't suggest it. Removing vandalism perms prevents the animal from bashing things on claim, and toggling vandal rights on your tamer + boar spear is typically how it's gotten close to taming HP threshold. Get the animal stuck in a way that you can hit it through the gap with the spear. Then you face tank it for the last bit.
