How do I get food other than Grubs? How do I equip my axe?

Postby Oriaan » Sat May 15, 2021 3:46 am

Hi I just started playing this game with my friend a few hours ago and we're both really confused as to how to do most things.
One thing we don't get is how do we find food other than grubs?
My friend is trying to figure out to fish I think just to get some food for one of the first quests.
I've wandered around and found grubs and some other foods, but only form shrubs. How do I get meat from animals? I saw a post saying that that was a first day food?

Also how do I equip my axe? I put it in my equipment window but I have no clue how to use it.

Sorry if this is poorly written.

here's a Early Guide to help you along
here's a more in depth guide once you get your feet

the early gameplay loop consists of:
Discovering new items via foraging, exploring, and crafting to earn Learning Points, in addition to studying curiosities
Buying Skills and leveling up attributes using your Learning Points to unlock more content, such as food recipes, equipment, armor, and buildings.
Eating food to level up Attributes
Once you get the hang of the game, it will be time to focus on finding a place to permanently settle, but for the time being it might just be best to focus on learning core game mechanics.

Fishing is a good source of early game food. craft a Pole, Line, Hook, and gather some bait and begin fishing where you see fish jumping out of the water.
Equipment must be equipped to certain slots, and will automatically be used when the time is appropriate - note that many things you might want to do with an axe such as chopping a tree will be locked behind the related skill until you buy it.

PS: don't try combat with *anything* yet. catching chickens and small critters is on the table, but combat is a whole can of worms

Part of the problems that it's currently winter in the game, where you can't find certain foods like fruits, berries or grasshoppers.
You can catch rabbits, squirrels and chickens by walking up to them and then changing to sprint speed (on grasslands) to catch them, that will give you some meat, bones and hides. Fish is a very good starting food, you can craft a Bushcraft Fishingpole until you have cloth and leather to craft a Primitive Casting-Rod.

As for tools like axes, you just need to have them equipped when you perform an action that requires it, like chopping down a tree.

Now im curious as to how I would go about catching animals, like actaully catching them if I catch up to them. also how long do seasons last?

Find foods that give Perception, and add points to Exploration value of your Perception * Exploration will determines which "foragables" you can find. they will be apparent on the minimap. You will need the Foraging skill. You're in a bad spot because winter eliminated basically all foragables. Spring starts soon and you'll be able to find stuff.

to catch animals you'll need the hunting skill. You only need to right click on a rabbit, squirrel, hedgehog, chicken to begin chasing it. Whether or not you catch it is a different matter.

Spring/summer/fall/winter are 10/30/10/5 real days long.

So are foragables like the flowers I find and pick and than can study? or are those something else?

Basically, yes. Forageables are flowers, mushrooms, small critters and various other things that spawn on the ground. Some can be studied, some can be eaten, some are useful for healing and some are just ingredients for other things. To see more stuff, you have to get higher perception and exploration.

Forageables (called "herbs" in game files) are temporary objects (every time map unloads due to no players being present, they restock (or are replaced)) You may pick up herbs by right clicking their model in the game world or icon on minimap, adn selecting "pick." Whether or not you see forageables is determined by your Perception x Exploration value.
