Do material accounts not work?

I tried to teach another character in my group leather and they didn't get any of the recipes, although it said it was taught and showed the rubbing sticks over their head. When I tried to teach it again, it said it was old news. Later when a batch of leather finished, they took one from the tub and got the discovery again, including the LP, and the recipes all unlocked. Do material accounts simply not work?

I've had that happen with hides, when the teaching character knows the item group but not the specific item, somehow. Like, if you've discovered any hide you can use any hide to teach somebody, but ones you haven't personally discovered will only teach them the generic "any hide" as opposed to the specific type, I believe. Maybe something like that.

Would be nice if the game notified you that you don't know everything about an item you're trying to teach.
