If anyone would be kind enough to illustrate to me how it works and some of its more important uses I would be extremely grateful.

recycling exists to let you get extra slots on gilding items through brute force instead of random chance based on skill levels

step 1 get two identical gilded items of any quality (i.e. two hemp shirts both with a taproot lacing)
step 2 leftclick one then rightclick the other and click recycle
step 3 the items are smashed together and you keep one clothing item left over
step 4 there is a chance that the leftover item has an extra gild slot (this is what you want)

when recycling you will randomly lose/keep the gilds on the items, so you should recycle your cheap items, and save your expensive items to put on last
