Learning the basics of PVP will save your life

Postby Clemins » Tue Mar 22, 2022 4:16 pm

I've seen a bunch of posts here over the years about PVP and how it effects the casual player base, and in some circumstances I used to agree with some "PVP BAD" standpoints, but I need to get this off my chest, maybe it will resonate with someone who is/was in a similar situation as me.

I've been playing Haven for years now and I'd say at this point I'm far from a sprucy boi, though not a super sweater either. PVP has been something that always intimidated me due to all the little things you have to know to fight effectively. Though as it turns out, it's really not that hard to learn the basics. As a matter of fact, this guide posted by DDDsDD999 ( viewtopic.php?f=42&t=72160 ) goes over 95% of the things you need to know. Why bring this up? Well I've been thinking, everyone has things they don't like about the game, but still do them anyways. Allow me to use an analogy to demonstrate what I mean:

I HATE farming and animal husbandry, like to the point when it's the only thing left to do I'd almost rather light myself on fire for more enjoyment. However, I still do it because it's a part of the game, I need to in order to experience everything else that I do enjoy doing. PVP used to be the same way, though mostly due to the intimidation. This connection hit me a couple of worlds ago and I realized if I'm going to play this game, I have to AT LEAST learn how to run away. Through the years i've asked for advice and even some practice with some people who knew PVP better than me. And I've come to this conclusion:

If you don't learn how to at least run away effectively, you're the only one to blame.

After a couple years short of a decade, it took a solid hour. That's it.
I can confidently say I'd at least give someone giving chase a hard time.

After this, I dove deeper into PVP and it's turning into one of my favorite features of the game. Which is a cool side effect, but not my point I suppose.

I guess what I'm trying to say to all of you who haven't done any sort of PVP, please do yourself the favor and take a little time to learn it, even if it's just learning how to run away. It might not be fun, you might not enjoy it, but just like my feelings towards farming and animal husbandry, you need it despite how you may feel about it.

Spar with friends, run away from each other while using critters and sprint boosts, practice in Valhalla, ask for advice. Just do yourself the favor if you feel like PVP is ruining your experience.

After a couple years short of a decade, it took a solid hour. That's it.

EDIT: For clarification, I'm not saying all I have is an hour of experience, what I'm trying to say that's probably as long as it'll take to understand roughly what to do, obviously try to practice more than that.

Have you just ran around with your friends or do you have some actual experience of getting suddenly attacked by likely outnumbered and overpowered enemy while you're picking blueberries in the forest?
Sudden appearance of knarr full of dhelmers?

My suggestion to noobs is to just give up if you get caught. Close the client and hope for the best.

Absolute shitter mentality from an absolute shitter.

Meanwhile, take a look at me, 3rd week in this game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bAzvaB7PEw
This was the first time I was chased, first world I played, I didn't even have armor yet, I WAS PICKING BLUEBERRIES IN THE FOREST AND WAS A TOTAL SHITTER (still am to some extent).

I had a total of 3 weeks experience when they started chasing me, I didn't even know how to turn trees off, I walked by a speed buff for fuck sake.

WE HAD BEARS IN OUR AIRLOCK, WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WE WERE DOING. THAT'S HOW BAD I WAS, OK?

The only fucking thing I knew how to do, was pressing the drink button (custom client feature btw, because custom clients don't cripple you, loftar)

Stop being an absolute retard and stop perpetuating that shit on other newbies. It's nobody's fault that you've been playing this game for 9 years and you're an absolute trash player. Sacraer and Ozzy still have all of their pvp videos visible for everyone to just watch and learn the most basic shit from, that's how I learned.

If you want to be an absolute shitter forever, don't blame it on the game, the devs and the toxic community. The fact that magicmanICT is defending pedos, and saying that pedophilia and homosexuality are pretty much the same thing, doesn't mean the PVP is impossible in this game. It's unrelated.
if you're reading this, you're a nerd.

Just this (without last part, idc). Played since w5 but never ever played in faction. Few runs (and KO's), and I understood how much I missed.

Well in some specific easy cases its possible of course, if you happen to be picking blueberries right in your backyard.
But in general you don't have any chance.

Without taking the time to learn what you're doing, you're right you don't have a chance. I made this post to encourage people to learn BEFORE they're in a situation where running is the only option.

Yes its easy to avoid getting ganked damn noob sprucecaps, why doesn't everybody just run with 27 liters of water with full toolbelt of waterskins and few more in their inventories ready to spend next 2 hrs in their computers running continuously. If opponents get too close just reduce openings with few flex moves!

I'm not sure if your'e just trying to flex with your combat montages or actually help sprucecaps here. Do you realize that a poor sprucecap does not even have combat moves unlocked? He can barely afford a birchbark cup and does not have space in his inventory/toolbelt for 10 waterskins?

If I think of cases where people have gotten ganked I'm sure that not even you could escape them.

Why should everybody spend effort to "learn to pvp" anyway so that they can successfully run away. What is point of pvp if everybody just runs away successfully? Don't you as pvp'er want either easy sprucecap kills because of being sociopath loser or then some even and exciting 50/50 outcome combats. Sprucecaps will never give you either.

Non consenting PVP should just be (effectively) removed from the game.

Maybe you get erect from running in forest for a few hours but that is simply just boring. Devs should bring back movement kamemberz or something to make it actually interesting. Or wait I forgot, that would likely be completely ruined these days anyways because of custom clients.
So just remove pvp, thats what I think.
