Star Shards; what do they do

Anybody who's willing to tell? I just found a starred sword washed up on the beach and it imbues things i cut with it (like some entrails from a chicken i butchered) with a star as well, but when i made a mirkwood offering (with unstarred mirkwood and seeds) it was unstarred, so i think all input has to be starred for the output to be. I can't see any obvious differences, the sword's stats are normal and its damage is 160 at q31.5 which feels accurate. I've heard 1 report that imbuing an item just increases its quality a bit but a friend who found one said he did not notice that. I don't actually have any but any info for future reference (and to stave curiosity) would be appreciated.

They let you imbue an item to raise the quality of them, the items getting the status down the line is to stop you snowballing that into 1000q items.
