Is it normal to get caved in on the initial cave wall?

Postby squeezy102 » Wed Oct 26, 2022 2:19 pm

Its happened to me twice now, caved in when breaking the initial cave wall. Not 2 tiles in, not 20 tiles in, just the initial cave wall. I thought there was supposed to be some kind of cave dusts minigame or some kind of warning?

I have 2 concussions and "something broken" and "unfaced" from getting caved in twice just doing some initial exploratory mining on cave walls just to see what's behind the wall. My friend says this isn't normal and that it never happens, but its happened to me twice. I'm inspecting (using ender client's inspector, not the in-game inspection) and see "cave wall" and I mine it, just that one square, and boom -- out cold.

Makes me scared to even try to mine anywhere. Seems like a pretty steep barrier to entry when I don't have any metal to make support beams? Like how am I supposed to do this safely?

this is preety normal, if a bit unlucky. biting into cave walls was never supposed to be safe and easy.

what kind of information do you get from this action?

Cave-in tiles appear to be static and set up during world generation, with no relation whatsoever with natural caves.

Custom clients have had ability to show what type of stone cave wall is through displaying resource info, this was added officially. You only need to select "Inspect" action to get the magnifying class cursor and hover it over a cave wall.

Just whatever its made out of. "Cave wall" or "Schist" or "Alabaster" is all.

Any tile in a cave can be a "cave-in" tile, even a floor tile. You only see a dust item after mining adjacent to a "cave-in" tile. If 10% of tiles are cave-in tiles, you have 10% chance of this happening when you mine a cave wall. The odds of it happening twice in a row would be 1%.

The safest method with no metal is to find a cave with a natural support pillar. You can see all supports with A > T > M keyboard shortcut.

Some people will use an alt for the initial wall mining, and not worry about the support, since the chance is so low.
