How are characters saved?

I played this game once before about 14 months ago? But when I came back just now I couldn't load my old char "Could not find resource" and my gut is telling me characters are stored locally and I deleted the file without realizing it. So how are characters stored and how do I prevent that from happening again. I didn't lose much progress so no milk spilled but I have a lot of free time ahead of me and I want to keep future progress.

All characters are lost from world reset. it is not you who lost your character, it is that your old character was wiped with the old world. this happens every so often as new features the dev has created requires a full world rebuild to implement.
