You will probably die and lose a lot of progress early on, especially if you are new to the game. Dying is part of the game. Expect it to happen, eventually, and don't get discouraged. Or ragequit, your choice. Understand it's a deep game and you will get your ass kicked several times whether it be from players or animals or stupid mistakes. You may even choose to start over after mastering certain aspects of the game. Should you quit, there will be new worlds soon for you to try again, fresh. But you don't even need to start a new world. You are never going to stand a chance against the best factions, until you join/create the best factions, so don't sweat it. There is so much else to enjoy in the game. I recommend starting in the first 3 months. After that, you really are meaningless, if I'm being completely honest, but you can still have a good solo life, especially if it's your first time playing. I've had some really great hermit bases 5~ months into worlds before. Or you can just join a pre-established village. The skills you gain from being solo, learning how to hunt, make bases, forage, will be invaluable to you in future worlds.

Also remember that while it is a permadeath game, you can still inherit some skills from your ancestors. This was not always the case. The game is much friendlier to death than it used to be.

You may run into very toxic people. They may be Nazis, or they may simply lie to you and pretend to be your friend so they can betray you. Trust nobody.

Your first goal is, if you haven't read any other guides, to put up a claim, which will become solid in 8 hours(which then requires criminal skills to fuck with). In your claim you will store your leather, which will be used to later soon build your palisade. Your claim will make you somewhat safe from thieves and vandals, but the palisade(big ass walls) ontop of the claim will require them to siege you, which will not be worth their time, early on.

Before you build a palisade, you can build fences inside your claim. If you build a gate it can potentially be lockepicked, depending on your skills when constructing it. To be safe, just build fences and estroy them when you need to get in. This will require a thief to have the vandalism skill rather than just lockpicking, trespassing, and stealing.

If you are completely new, understand this is a complex game, and no guide will be perfect, and many game mechanics are kept secret by the best players, so you should always use your intelligence to form the best strategy. That being said, it's probably a good choice to invest in survival early on and make foods that boost your intelligence so that you can study more curiosities.

Here is also known exploit which has recently been allowed and is useful to noobs. This can be potentially life-saving and time-saving for a noob, and invalidates the previous advice should you use it, however it has its downsides:

It is a really great game, the best game ever in my opinion and I hope that launch goes well and many players read this and give the game a fair chance.

tldr;
Watch out for boars and players.
Get spanked a few times and learn that Snail and friends are the worst human beings.
Then play flute.
