Fastest method for growing trees?

Say that I am trying to start a mulberry farm, besides skills and credos, what affects the growth of the trees?

Certain layout?
Using mulch vs dirt?
Quality of water, dirt and planting pots?
Planting on a biome vs plowed land?
Anything else I missed?

So far I planted a few mulberries but they have been twigs for a while now

the two biggest things are you want to plant on a forest biome for faster tree growth, an until you have druidic rite you risk stunt chance which can be remedied through hearth magic.

planting with a treepot won't stunt trees anymore, only shovel planting may stunt later

trees grow faster on forrest biomes.
planted trees also generate forrest biomes underneath them, and this spreads to other trees.
so treeplanting as a whole, is a industry that ramps up over time.

otherwhise, growhtspeed, is always the same

Lets assume worst case scenario: you're on grasslands.

Background: Forest terrain can be created by two methods: trees ACTIVELY growing will occasionally convert nearby terrain into forest terrain (wald), and forest terrain itself will occasionally spread overtop dirt, just like grass does. Trees do NOT spread forest biome once they're full grown, and forest terrains do NOT passively spread overtop grasslands.

First thing you do is stomp to dirt all the grasslands. Then you go and gather as many garbage tree seeds as possible, and on every single tile in your tree farm area you plant them (plant lore needed). The vast majority will stunt, but that's okay, you're just trying to spawn in as many forest tiles as possible. As forest tiles spawn in, make sure the tree planted on them isn't stunted, since those tiles will grow faster and get more ticks.

Do all trees always convert surroundgs to wald while growing? My current planting area is heath/leaf/plowed, should I stomp to dirt any of these?

Trees only convert to wald, yes. Plowed tiles can also decay to forest or grassland naturally, so they're fine ... except that the heath is a grassland tile, so you want to get rid of any heath in your treefarm. Heath is a nice thing to have in the rest of your base! Pave a barrier between the heath and the treefarm, have only forest and dirt/plowed tiles inside it.

The trees will occasionally generate forest tiles on the wrong side of the barrier. I recommend getting rid of them, because living on forest terrain is a stupid waste of energy. And I'm saying this as someone who lived on Leaf last world, which is all very pretty but ... no. I am currently engaged in converting a small section of forest to Boring Flat Green Grass.

if you are coming from that angle. grassland is a waste of energy, you use up waaaaay less stamina on paved ground than on grassland,

i use grass for decorative purposes. and sometimes yarrow spawns on your lawn,
but not living in forrest biomes is just a drag for forrager and hunters.
and ultimately you want to pave everything you walk/run on

... ok yes, I have a quest to pick heartsease. And yarrow is nice too. You're right about paving for max efficiency, but quite apart from how far I am from a yarrow biome, it turns out that I am enough of a larper that I don't want to pave everything (unless I actually get a good idea for some artwork).
