How do paid hats work?

Postby MycroSparks » Fri Nov 15, 2024 2:13 pm

Yesterday I got attacked, and for the price of my life I was asked for my premium hat. Not knowing how any of these mechanics work and not wanting to lose a week of progress again, I obliged and transfered ownership of the hat to the dude - which is all fine, I don't care much about it, however I was under the assumption that in the next World (whenever that happens) id be able to get it again and use it?

My question is basically - is the hat now forever lost from my account without a way of getting it back, or is it still tied to my account?

Ah, I was afraid this was the case. Thanks for the replies and information, it's my fault that I wasn't aware this is how it worked, but it's just a silly hat anyway, that's the price of playing a hardcore survival game with a world filled with people who play way more seriously than me :)

Just curious if there's a way to purchase the hat without having to make a new account, since I assume I'm still getting the benefits of my acc being premium, and that I can't repurchase that again (and it probably wouldn't be worth 15$ for just the hat :) )

You can always repurchase if it's still in the store, but they leave the store and become a limited collectible eventually.
Total misplay.

If it's a hat that is now unavailable for purchase from the store, then you can't re-purchase it. You can purchase one from another player if they have one they are willing to sell or trade, or do what the player did to you and demand someone's that is not capable of fighting back.

Real Money Trading is a common occurrence in this game and the devs don't care to police it, if the hat that you lost was one that is no longer obtainable, players in this game are willing to pay upwards of hundreds of dollars in some cases to obtain some of the less common or rare hats. You may not be losing out on just the money you spent, but whatever the actual value of the hat may have been now.

It's quite a stupid system and only gives greater incentive to steal shop items from the newest and most inexperienced players causing them to lose out on money they spent and possibly the devs losing out on further purchases.

I think I understand the situation now, cheers for everyone that took the time to explain :)

It is a bit of a sucky situation, and I'm considering moving to a new place after I level up my stats a bit in my current homestead due to how many aggressive people seem to be playing around me (I got murdered a week ago, hence why I didn't even bother negotiating and just gave into the demands), but it's one of those things that make the game more impactful and more fun when you're doing good, so I'm just looking at this as a learning experience :D

As for the hat - it was the Green one that you get for having a verified account, so I guess I could verify another account and transfer ownership of it to this one if I really wanted it back. Although I was considering subscribing, and it seems like the better choice now more then ever, although I'm not sure if the premium hats you get from there are also permanent (as long as you don't transfer ownership to someone that is  ).

Anyway, thanks again to all the helpful replies, always so many things to learn about this game :)

Now it's on Steam Store i'm not really certain there will not be some problems with such actions.

And OP, never give your hat to racketeer, they will come back to you next time asking for more it's basic, and a day they will kill you anyway.
In early days they can't kill you easily.

hey man I don't like it either, but it's obviously being allowed by the devs and has been for quite some time

It's fine, I just wanted to educate myself on the available options which is exactly what you did - the choice of what I'm going to do next is up to me - and I don't really care much about the hats, although obviously I'm not a huge fan of losing mine :D
