Unable to extend my palisade walls

I built the palisade, and I have built one section of wall in each direction off of it. However, every time I try to build another section it says "You cannot build that on this type of terrain". I have surveyed it and it is all the same level, and I have tried stomping it to dirt and plowing it. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Use a plow along the tiles adjacent to the wall path (or hand-plow but that's far more stamina and time intensive) and then pave or stomp to dirt to see if that helps at all. It might be forest or thicket biome beside the wall which you need to get rid of first. Sometimes tiles might not "refresh" properly, for example a plowed/dirt ground goes back to forest but you can't tell until you plow around nearby and the terrain changes which could also be the issue.
