Are there any hidden pre-reqs for animals to breed, or I'm just getting really unlucky?

Had a mare for like a day and a half, 4 stallions around her and no foal on the way. I isolated her now with just one stallion in case they blocked each other, and I guess I'll just wait, but was still curious.
Their pen is not the biggest, but I don't think that should be an issue? My cows got busy in like half a day and same size pen..

animals seem to have a cooldown after taming, and being pregnant.
wich might be randomised.

horses that where kept alone usually jump at each other at the first opportunity.
