Quest givers

So I finished a quest the other day for one of the seated toads. And I didn't see the message where it said I received something. But I look in my inventory and I got a q80 metal axe . Is this a normal thing ? Do quest givers give you items ? I've gotten gildings from them but I didn't know you could get actual quality items . Or did I just get lucky and pick a random dropped axe on my adventures?

you can get items people delivered for their quests

yep. somebody most likely did blacksmith and got "deliver a metal axe to X"
any item given to a questgiver becomes part of the global reward pool for questgivers.

The message is '#NAME gave you something that was lying around'. It should appear in your message log, you just might not see it pop up if you see '#NAME gave you 17 XP' or whatever instead - gifts are an occasional bonus on top of the usual quest rewards.

You may also have found this item in beach trash, when fishing or when digging!
