Bunnies in Rabbit Hutch turned into A Bloody Mess...

Post by Rosebuddy »

Hi there! Would anybody be able to help me understand what happened here?

I have been breeding rabbits in the rabbit hutch, they finally had bunnies. I've been waiting a couple days for them to grow up into full sized rabbits but when I went to check on them today, three of them were 'A Bloody Messs...' which I know happens after a hearthling or even something like a fox kills a bunny or a baby chick. I'm a bit confused as I did not do this and nobody else has access to the hutch which is inside my palisades.

I was online when the world crashed overnight and just logged back in a little while ago to find this. I am certain they had water and swill.

Either you are wrong, or you have been putting garbage in as swill. (That, or the image doesn't tell the whole story.)

The quality of a bunny is the average of its parents +/- 5, so in the worst case that would be (18 + 10) / 2 - 5 = 9. Quality drops during their lifetime when either they get subpar swill or water, or when they try to eat/drink but there is no swill/water.

Your third bloody mess is quality 7 (and you also have three quality 8 bunnies), which implies they didn't always get their food (that, or your swill was quality 1 or something; it averages with the water, which is always minimum q10).

Of course, a third option would be that these bunnies were the children of a lower-quality Buck that's not in the image. But the image as-is implies starvation.

My best guess is that baby chickens and bunnies feed the same way as rest of farm animals, ie, in first stages of life they feed on mother's milk instead of swill. There just might be not enough females in the hutch to sustain the amount of bunnies. I always go for 6 females + 1 male and never once encountered this problem.

Q1 swill and water works fine. It will just kill the animal qualities, but not the animals/bunnies themself. (I'm having such a q1 hutch)

I know sometimes hamsters kill their babies if they are not able to feed them all. So maybe this is some kind of this.

You are a great detective! So yes, originally, the Buck that was in the hutch was q10. He fathered all of the bunnies in the hutch - I have not seen any new bunnies born since swapping out the Buck. The new Buck and also the Doe in the bottom of the hutch were ones that I caught later, and were originally q20 but fell slightly due to the quality of Swill.
