OP was being reasonable, why not bargain for something in the long term. An ally/friend that lasts a few months is worth more than a node of iron.
If I caught someone stealing from say, my farmland, I'd offer them more seeds for free and let them know I'm open for trade or working together. Not that I would expect 95% of the Hafen demographic to understand this with your crippling social disorders.

This is something every raider learns when
they reach enlightenment. To raid one's
base is to get a single return on your time
which cannot be done as easily the second
time around if the opponent even chooses
to continue. To take everything from your
neighbors is to risk that resource drying up
for good. This raider made the mistake of
taking your goods that you were working
for too early, and then he proceeded to
have to work for more of that same good
that he could have let you taken care of.
Of course that means he would have had
to monitor and protect you from other
thieves in the meantime. Regardless the
proper method would have been to first
observe you and find whether or not you
were growing at a decent rate. If you had
shown signs that you were starting to near
a plateau, then he should allow you to dig
all the metal up, and then take it from you
when you're done, or nearly done. This
leads to max gains, but requires a great
deal more intelligence as well as proper
stalking.
If you were a very productive person that
never reached a plateau, the proper way
to handle you would be to offer you trades.
But most raiders lack the attention span to
properly handle their neighbors. The only
solution to an unintelligent thief is death.

You write funny.
But I like you.
