Except the past has proven good will is not shield against game mechanics. It's simply easier to steal, destroy and murder than it is to build and punish those that do.

a man need only strike another to make him evil."

Wasn't it like that in the pre-feudal times too?

Not really, that's a misconception. Because in a game theory perspective cooperation is almost always better than elimination, since it means less wasted energy for the winning party in both the short and long terms. Peace is more profitable than destruction, slaves are better than corpses, developed partners are better than no partner at all etc.

I think a good thing to add would be a jailing system, like if you can KO someone, then you can attach him like taming an animal which would also prevent hearthing, then get him into a pali/bwall and wait for them to rot.

That's worse than dying and a horrible gameplay mechanic: "Hm let me log in...what to do today? Oh right, sit in a cage and do nothing at all..." At least when you die you can respawn at your hearthfire and start over.

Yeah exactly, that might deter criminals.

Scents are not a moral compass. Someone leaving a murder scent does not have to be a criminal.

Criminals rarely get caught in this game, that is part of the problem. Instead it would be a competition between PvP factions over who has the largest noob zoo.

the bigger problem is those who enjoy fighting play the criminals and they are usually the most dedicated of all. being a ranger isnt yet rewarding/attractive/encouraging enough to play as dedicated as criminal players, besides it is often too risky. people ask for some safety all the time (like mail notification), but the same safety mechanism always protects the criminals all the same or even better because they are more dedicated and well informed than most casuals. when you are safe, criminals are safe too. when criminals are unsafe, those who stand up and fight against criminals face the same unsafety.

what we actually need is to build up some communities who try to fight against crimes (in game, that is), and its quite sad to see this thread seems to have failed.
