I'm still convinced that 'hunger' should be renamed 'appetite' and 'energy' to 'nutrition level' (or something along that, making clear that it's vital to health and the connection to healing obvious).

Why?
Most people who play HnH dont know enough english to realize the difference between the two anyway.

because you care so much for this game looking at C&I, Im surprised youre so negative here! omg!

update:

I have recovered 3 HHP since my first post. It's painfully slow, but I guess it works as intended.

The satiation thing should change its name to 'constipation' and reversed.
The more constipation you have, the longer the food stays inside you, thus giving you more nutrients!

Update:

I was fed up with waiting and got him to work on the Pali again.
Ofcause that would cost energy and I stuffed him with any food I could find to keep him at (at least near) maximum energy.
And lo and behold, he is regaining HHP overnight (didn't sleep in a bed).

I don't even know what to make of this, except that I will continue to work as usual whilst making sure he doesn't starve again.

Hmm, it actually seems that starvation (unlike other wounds) only heals while the character is online, and therefore is also unaffected by beds. Not sure if that was perhaps intended (to be consistent with how SHP heals), or if it was just some kind of oversight. Would have to discuss with Jorb.
